There are 23 verses in Chapter 5 of the book of Proverbs. Verses 1 and 2 read, “1. My son, pay attention to my wisdom; listen carefully to my wise counsel. 2. The you will show discernment, and your lips will express what you’ve learned.”
It concludes with the last three verses reading, “21. For the LORD sees clearly what a man does, examining every path he takes. 22. An evil man is held captive by his own sins; they are ropes that catch and hold him. 23. He will die for lack of self-control; he will be lost because of his great foolishness.”
If you think about it almost any sin and/or folly known to man could come in between those beginning and ending verses, but this chapter in Proverbs specifically speaks to the sins of lust and adultery.
It goes into pretty graphic detail about the dangers, toils, and snares of giving into the temptation of sexual impurity outside of marriage.
As men this is one of the greatest temptations that we face. Especially in this era of mass media blasting us at every turn with images of sexual immorality and promiscuity. Society likes to call it “sexual freedom”, but the cost to our heart, soul, spirit, and body is anything but free.
As an “experienced” man (I prefer that term to “older”) I can tell you younger men that the battle with lustful thoughts and desires never ends, but through daily prayer, daily reading of God’s wisdom in the Bible, and asking daily for His forgiveness and strength to withstand the flesh, you can stay strong and blessed.
The verse to memorize and repeat anytime you are tempted is verse 21. “For the LORD sees clearly what a man does, examining every path he takes.” There is extreme strength in knowing that you are never “alone”.
