Psalm 139:23-24

Written by Taylor Olson

Search me, oh God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! See if there be any grievous ways in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.  Psalm 139:23-24

David is the author of this Psalm. These verses are a raw look into the heart of David. In these verses we can see that David is speaking to God openly and honestly.  Our hearts our wicked. Hearts can be jealous, manipulative, and selfish. Our thoughts, as well, can take us in many wrong directions.

David is telling God to search him, investigate, and see if He finds anything wrong in there. He tells him to search his heart and and his thoughts. God knows our hearts and our every thought. David is being real. He's laying it all out, and asking God to show him if there is anything that should change. We need to be real and honest with ourselves and God for real change to happen in our lives. Turning to God is the only way to make any change. Be honest, tell God your thoughts, and ask Him to lead You in a better way.

Ask Him to take over your thoughts.

In the  Fan or Follower series last fall Pastor Brad talked about what it meant to be a disciple of Jesus. He showed us what this meant in Matthew 4:19.  It says, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” The first step is to follow. We must make a decision to follow Jesus. The second step is "I will make you”, meaning God will work on you, and make you into the disciple He wants. The last step is, “fishers of men.” God will use us to bring others to Him.

If we look at back at Psalm 139:23-24 we see a tie in to the second step in Matthew 4:19, “I will make you.” When we allow God to work in us, He will make us and shape us into becoming more like Him. David in the Psalm is being real and honest and asking God to search him and to lead him in the way everlasting. We need to be open and honest and let God search our hearts and allow Him to work on our hearts and minds so that He can make us into better disciples.  Disciples who show others Jesus.

We need to be real and authentic with God, ourselves, and others. When we do that, others will be drawn to Jesus, and that real, authentic love.

Prayer: Lord help me to be honest and open with You like King David. Work in me, and make me into the disciple You want and need.
